Ian Donaghy, Author, Innovator and Speaker

“Big” Ian Donaghy has a varied CV that includes roles as Bouncer, Special school teacher, Successful musician, Author, Innovator and Speaker. Now at just under 17 stone (the lowest since the days of Wham he claims) he sometimes misses the additional 12 stone he used to carry around, particularly on cold days.

Writer of the books DEAR DEMENTIA and THE MISSING PEACE, he has also developed initiatives such as “Xmas Presence” to combat loneliness in older people at Christmas. He also created “A Night to Remember” – the UKs largest musical event to raise awareness of Dementia. He has developed a free campaign #Dementiaisateamgame which has involved the likes of the Hairy Bikers, Barry Mcguigan & Frank Lampard

Ian won the Innovation in Dementia Care Award 2018 and is a previous Care trainer of the year.

Chris Baker, McDowalls Surveyors

Chris has been the owner of McDowalls since 2011 having started his professional career as a property manager there in 1999. McDowalls specialises in residential lease extensions and freehold enfranchisement cases; residential private rented sector management; and, property licensing. Its clients include local housing associations, private clients, local authorities and corporate clients.

Andrew Bannister, Earl Kendrick Building Surveyors

Andrew graduated in 2015 from Nottingham Trent University with an Honours Degree in Building Surveying, he subsequently qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 2018 and quickly moved through the ranks with his employers before joining Earl Kendrick. 

Andrew started his career as a building surveyor within the residential leasehold sector and he has continued  within this sector he has a passion for. Client care is at the forefront of Andrew’s business mind-set and he backs this up with his surveying skills that he continually trains to grow. Andrew has recently trained to become an APC assessor and is an APC counsellor helping the next generation of surveyors obtain chartership

Justin Bates, Landmark Chambers

Justin is a barrister at Landmark Chambers. He is the Deputy Editor of the Encyclopedia of Housing Law and the co-author of Leasehold Disputes, amongst various other publications. The legal directories say that there is”…no one better for service charge disputes…” and he is “widely recognised as one of the best of his generation.”

Cecilia Brodigan

Cecilia Brodigan has over 30 years experience in senior operational roles in private and social housing organisations. As a consultant leasehold specialist and a keen advocate of improving customer focus and service improvement in the leasehold sector, Cecilia helps organisations to make sense of leasehold combining her practical operational skills and knowledge of leasehold legislative framework. She has achieved success working with organisations to drive strategic change and influencing operational teams in achieving improved performance.

Cecilia has a keen interest in the leasehold retirement sector and supports the voluntary Board of the Association of Retirement Housing Managers (ARHM) in its day to day operations and representing them at the various Government and Law Commission consultative forums driving forward the leasehold reform agenda.

Darren is a Partner and leads the Enfranchisement Team in Bolt Burdon. He has extensive experience of all aspects of Enfranchisement and Leasehold Law having specialised in this field for in excess of 15 years.

Rob Corley, Credensa

Rob started tinkering with computer and programming before he was a teen and in 2001, aged 13, started a small business doing web development which would become Gigabyte Software.

Early software systems he built ranged from CRMs to contract management systems. It wasn’t until 2007 that he was introduced to the property industry. But for the last 13 years, Gigabyte Software has solely focussed on PropTech solutions.

During this period Rob also completed a BSc in Astrophysics from The University of Edinburgh in which he achieved a First-class honours.

Katie Gray, Tanfield Chambers

Katie is a specialist property practitioner. She was called to the bar in 2013 and is experienced in all areas of property law, with a particular focus on boundaries and party wall disputes. She also appears regularly in the First Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) in a wide range of service charge disputes.

Amanda Gourlay, Tanfield Chambers

Amanda is recognised in Chambers & Partners and the Legal 500. She is known for her expertise in residential landlord and tenant law, covering service charges, the appointment of a manager, the right to mange, breaches of covenant, forfeiture and associated legal costs. That expertise is regularly deployed in courts and tribunals rangingfrom the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber) to the Court of Appeal.  She is a contributor to the4th edition of “Service Charges and Management” by Tanfield Chambers. Her popular and well-regarded blog, Law and Lease, summarises and comments on service charge decisions. In 2016, she was awarded the fellowship of the Institute of Residential Property Management.

Mick Hill, TPAS

Michael joined Tpas in February 2019 as Business Development Manager. Michael has worked within Resident Involvement since 2000 for Local Authorities and Housing Associations and as a Tpas Associate since 2017. A Qualification in Adult Education enables him to deliver training sessions to staff and involved customers. Michael takes his down to earth and transparent approach as the foundation for building strong relationships. With a variety of skills honed from working in all areas of Housing, Michael is an effective communicator with a passion for co-regulatory engagement.

Yez Izzet, Bolt Burdon

Yezdan specialises in resolving complex property disputes including disrepair, rent and service charge arrears, breaches of lease, forfeiture, rooftop development; breach of contract; management disputes and possession claims. Yez is a popular trainer for the NLG who uses her extensive knowledge and experience to lead engaging and informative sessions.

Dr Shaun Lundy, Tetra Consulting

Shaun is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner and Chartered Building Engineer with over 25 years of experience. Shaun leads a team of advisors and surveyors providing risk management services across the property management sector. In addition to his day job Shaun is a visiting Scholar at the University of Greenwich, a member of ARMA and IRPM health and safety committees, a member of the HSE Myth Buster Challenge Panel, and a Member of the Policy and Standards Committee at the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health. Shaun’s research interests include leadership, education and competence in health, safety and fire practice

Jeff Platt, Section 20 Ltd

Jeff is Managing Director of Section20 Ltd; leasehold consultants to both the public and private sectors. Jeff has been heavily involved in developing professional qualifications, examinations and training within the long leasehold sector. He is the lead author of the Property Management Chapter of the RICS UK Residential Property Standards (‘the blue book’) and the RICS Guidance: Managing mixed use developments. Jeff is also a Member of the First Tier Tribunal (Property Chamber).

James has over 40 years’ experience in the IT industry. He has previously created strategic consulting businesses supporting the digital document industry with clients such as VW Financial Services, Severn Trent Water, FirstAssist, Jersey Post, Canon Europe, British Telecom, Kern (UK) and edotech (Barclays Bank). In 2000 he joined the edotech MBO team and secured such clients as British Telecom, MBNA Bank Europe, Legal & General, ING along with Barclays Bank. James has been an active member of various industry associations, including President of Xplor International. He gives regular thought-leadership talks and presentations at leading industry events.

ARHM Speaker Adrian Shaw

Adrian Shaw, Clarion

Adrian has worked in social housing since the early 1980’s and became involved in low cost home ownership in the late 1990’s. He joined Centra Living (a part of Circle Housing Group) in February 2012 and was responsible for the management of 13,500 leasehold and intermediate housing properties, for the nine Group partners.

Following the formation of Clarion Housing Group in December 2016, he was appointed Head of Service Charges. He is an active member of the National Leasehold Group. He is also a member of the CIOH, RICS and IRPM. He is also a board member of Southwark’s newly formed Homeowners Agency.

Stuart Shield, Learning Curve / PROPel

Recently named one of the most Influential people in Property Management, Stuart has worked in the property industry for over 20 years and is the Property & Housing Area Manager UK at Learning Curve.

Stuart has owned and run his own Estate & Lettings agencies and Property Management companies,  as well as working for large corporates and smaller independent companies at a senior level. This gives Stuart a unique insight into the industry and some of the problems, requirements and issues around knowledge and training. 

Alan Wake, Claws Consultants

Alan specialises in Leasehold Training and Consultancy within the Public Sector. He is Co-Founder and Chief Executive of the National Leasehold Group, a large networking group for Leasehold professionals in Housing Associations. Alan is involved in a number of cross sector initiatives with the aim of improving standards and education in property management. A Fellow of the Institute of Residential Property Management and a regular speaker at conferences.

Emma Webster, Lifestory

Emma Webster is Head of Corporate Affairs for Lifestory Group (made up of Pegasus and Renaissance; both retirement companies and Anthology, general needs housing) leading on national policy work for the company, as well as the company’s corporate response to COVID-19. She is also responsible for site-specific political and community engagement activities across the group.  

Emma was a local Councillor for 16 years and has held various Cabinet positions, including Highways and Transport, Regeneration, Community Safety and Housing.
